Mendhar Oct 12: People in Mendhar are up in arms against the concerned authorities here for turning the only bus stand into a garbage dump amid the much hyped Swachh Bharat Campaign.
The locals said dump at the main bus stand not only is emanating pungent smell but also is causing immense inconvenience to the commuters. The problem is compounded by presence of stray dogs and cattle. The traders said the presence of garbage dumps has drastically affected business in the area. Accusing the Rural Development Department (RDD) Mendhar authorities of turning the bus stand into a dumping garbage site, the residents of Mendhar said that Rural Development Department Mendhar authorities yet have not installed dustbins on the road sides, leading to accumulation of garbage in the bus stand. The garbage and other waste material collected from various areas of the town by the authorities are dumped in the bus stand every day, said the residents. "Heaps of garbage make the pedestrian movement difficult and also the stinking smell irritates the passengers. Sometimes they (RDD Mendhar) burn garbage in the bus stand, causing pollution," said another shopkeeper"
"We have time and again approached the RDD officials about the matter and even have sent various representations," a transporter said and added that no action has been taken till date in this regard. The locals also complained about lack of drainage system and public convenience facilities at the bus stand. "We pay Rs 20 as entry fee daily, but the authorities have failed to provide us basic facilities," another transporter lamented. "A little shower few days ago virtually has turned the bus stand into a cesspool," he added. Meantime when contacted senior official of RDD Mendhar on anonymity said, "I have recently assumed the charge."But I have taken up this issue with the officials concerned, and soon things would be sorted out, he assured.
