Animal right activists accuse Wildlife Deptt for dereliction of duty | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 27: Citing example of illegal sale of Turtles in a pet shop in Newplot area, the locals and animal right activists have alleged that cruelty towards animals is due to dereliction of duty by none other but the nodal and concerned Wildlife Department Animal right activist said, “The Wildlife protection Act 1978, extends to the whole of J&K state and it reads in Chapter 5 Trade or commerce in wild animals, all wild animals etc. to be Government property. “No person shall, after the commencement of this Act acquire, receive keep in his control, custody or possession, sell or otherwise transfer or transport any animal specified in Schedule 1,schedule 2 , except with the previous permission in writing of the Chief wildlife warden or the authorized officer, activist said while adding, “no person shall purchase, receive or acquire any captive animal ,other than from a person authorized to sell or otherwise transfer the same under this Act.” Citing an example activist said that it was 28th August this year one such offence was bought to the notice of wildlife warden Jammu by Rumpy madaan, Chairperson Save ‘save animals value environment’ regarding the illegal sale of Turtles in a pet shop in New Plot area. “The Turtles were recovered and handed over to the wildlife warden Deer park Manda, he added. Activist also pin pointed that both Wildlife Warden and the concerned Chowki Officer Sarwal were seen busy trying to pass the buck in each other. “Repeated calls and visits to both wildlife Deer park Manda and the Sarwal Police Post , by Ms Rumpy Madaan to bring the culprit to justice has not produced any results. Unfortunately this is not an isolated case in Jammu, he lamented. Pertinently the pet shops are freely buying and selling wildlife protected animal/ birds and reptiles without any action from the concerned authorities. Although the Act Authorized the chief wildlife warden or the authorized officer or any police officer not below the rank of sub- inspector may, if he/she has reasonable grounds to believe that any person has committed an offence, to search, seize any captive wild animal, animal article, meat trophy, or uncured trophy. They can arrest him without a warrant and detain him. Right activist also added the inaction of the wildlife department has letdown the mute creatures which are under the custody and protection of the concerned department.
