Will BJP honour its commitment, end discrimination with Leh? | Jammu being ignored, humiliated | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 27: The BJP has been celebrating its victory in the Leh Council elections since October 23. There are legitimate reasons for it to celebrate its victory. After all, it won 18 of the 25 seats it contested and decimated the ruling Congress and it will be in the driving seat, for the first time, in the region, on or before November 7. In the meantime, BJP national vice-president and in-charge J&K affairs Avinash Rai Khanna said, "The BJP had gone to the people of Ladakh with an agenda of development and providing a corruption-free administration. Voters showed faith in our party and rejected the Congress, which only provided lip service, but did nothing in practical to understand and mitigate the problems of the region". He also assured the people of Leh district that "the BJP would work to ensure that the region was not discriminated against anymore" and that "the party would ensure that an era of development, progress and prosperity starts in the region". It is difficult to believe Khanna, or for that any BJP leader, that the BJP would honour the commitment it held out to the Ladakhis during the election campaign and after registering an emphatic win. It is difficult to trust the BJP because it had made similar commitments with the neglected, ignored and politically marginalized people of Jammu province during and after the election campaigns in 2014 and won both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections by capturing both the Lok Sabha seats and 25 Assembly seats, but after wining the elections it abandoned its core constituency to become part of the system that had resulted in its socio-economic and political degeneration. The BJP in alliance with the PDP prepared, approved and adopted an agenda of alliance that negated the party's Vision Document 2014 on the basis of which it sought and got Jammu's mandate. The BJP inked with the PDP a power-sharing formula that handed over almost everything to Kashmir. In fact, the BJP rigorously excluded Jammu province from the State Cabinet, handed over all the vital portfolios to the already very powerful and pampered Kashmir and also deprived the province of its due share in other spheres, including recruitment agencies like Public Service Commission, corporations, boards and what not. The truth is that the plight of the people of Jammu province was never so pathetic as it has been since March, when the BJP "cheated" and "let down" them to become part of the system it had all along opposed saying it was Kashmir-centric and anti-Jammu. The BJP not only excluded the people of Jammu province from almost all the important spheres, but it also insulted and taunted them over the issues of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and Tawi Artificial Lake Project. The BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, for example, declared in Jammu itself that no power on earth could snatch AIIMS from Kashmir and it will not be established in Jammu and he also remained mum when the PDP declared in Jammu that AIIMS will be established in Kashmir and the Artificial Lake Project could be shelved for financial and technical reasons. There are several other instances which serve to demonstrate its pro-Kashmir tendencies. The experience shows that the BJP is not a dependable political party and that it has harmed Jammu more than any Kashmir-based party. In any case, things will become clear after the BJP forms the council in Leh. Till then, let's keep our fingers crossed. |
