Gulmarg freezes at minus 5, coldest night at Pahalgam, Leh, Kargil

Srinagar, Oct 27: The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg freezed at minus 5 degree Celsius minimum temperature while famed health resort of Pahalgam, Leh and Kargil also recorded coldest night of the season. Kashmir valley experienced icy cold winds forcing people to wear warm and woolen cloths due to drop in the mercury. However, a Met department spokesperson this afternoon predicted dry weather during the next five days in Jammu and Kashmir. After recent snowfall on the upper reaches, including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, the highest skiing point, the mercury witnessed considerable drop at Gulmarg, where coldest night was recorded after the minimum settled at minus 5. Met spokesperson said the earlier coldest was minus 3 degree, recorded yesterday. The other north Kashmir areas, where dozens of far flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) were closed due to snowfall, also recorded drop in the mercury. Pahalgam, the famed health resort in south Kashmir also recorded minus 0.5 degree minimum temperature, coldest so far. In summer capital, Srinagar, where life was affected due to strike, there was one degree drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterday 4.8 degree it was 4 degree which is being considered normal during this time of the season. However, the day temperature remained below normal due to icy cold winds. The MeT spokesperson said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 17 degrees and 5 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours. There was also more than five degree drop in the minimum temperature at Leh and four degree at border town of Kargil, he said. Against yesterday’s 2.6 degree minimum temperature, Leh recorded minus 2.8 degree while at Kargil against yesterday’s 1.8 degree it was minus 2.6 degree coldest night of the season so far. Earlier, coldest at Leh was minus 2.7 degree recorded on October 22 while at Kargil it was minus 0.6 degree on October 21.
