Encroachment on Suru banks: Kargilites demand prompt action against land mafia | | | Early Times Report Kargil, Feb 10: Expressing resentment against the district authorities for allegedly allowing unabated land encroachment along the banks of River Suru, the people of the Kargil town have approached the state and the Central officials demanding prompt action against the perpetrators. "Despite repeated pleas, the district administration has utterly failed to take action against encroachers and is allowing unabated encroachment of state land in the town particularly along the banks of River Suru," locals alleged. Mohd Mussa, a religious and social activist alleged that allowing construction of superstructures, hotels and private houses near head work of Iqbal Hydel Project is not only disturbing ecological balance in area but also is making a huge human populace to sit on danger zone besides Suru river which may prove fatal when in spate. "Untreated effluents from these commercial complexes goes into the river straightway as no provision for its treatment has been made thus polluting the river waters," he lamented. "Over 20 kanals of land from the river bed has been raised and converted into land mass for construction of the bus stand, he alleged and said the construction of the bus stand has no mention in the official revenue records. Another agitated local also alleged, "Surprisingly, the natural course of the river too has been diverted due to construction of retaining wall within the river bed for which official funds were used. It is likely to pose a great environmental threat to the local population particularly during rainy season." Appealing the authorities to prevent impending disasters, speakers sought a timely intervention by them in saving the area from causing further damage to flora and fauna of the area. They also demanded a physical inspection by an official team to probe into the misuse of public land and funds. Kargil (8500 feet high) is a major historical and border town on Srinagar- Leh- Zanskar roads with a population of over 145,000 souls in entire district. |
