Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 10: Despite alarming increase in the number of cancer patients across the state with each passing year, the Health and Medical Education Department has dumped the proposed project of establishing Cancer Centre in Jammu.
Pertinently, keeping in view sharp increase in number of cancer patients, then Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad had sanctioned two Tertiary Cancer Centres for Jammu and Kashmir under the National Cancer Control Programme, but owing to lackadaisical approach of H&ME department of State, the funds for establishing Cancer Centre have not been released by Union Government since last more than three years.
"Due to non-seriousness of State Health and Medical Education Department , the case of estabilishing proposed cancer centres has not been taken up with the union government and the patients and their families have to suffer this indifferent attitude" said an officer of the department.
Sources further said the land for establishing same in Jammu has been identified inside the premises of Super Specialty Hospital at Resham Ghar colony in Jammu but years have been passed but not even single penny has been released by Centre government in this regard and patients are struggling to get advance and quality treatment.
Source further claimed that existing infrastructure is pathetically inadequate looking into the increasing cases of cancer both in Jammu and Kashmir regions as there is shortage of staff, doctors and latest technology. The COBALT 60 machine which is available in the GMC hospital caters to huge rush of patients daily.
Sources stated that the machine installed some 20 years ago has outlived its life and may break down any time, with no alternative available.
Head, Prof Dr Ashutosh Gupta confirmed that there are problems in treating patients and further said number of times, they have written to the concerned department about the shortage of funds, manpower and others but are waiting for response.
