Pathetic condition of local porters at Siachen- a matter of concern: MLA Nubra

Leh, Feb 10: Expressed deep concerns over the 10 brave soldiers who got buried under avalanche resulting into death of nine jawans while other is struggling for life, Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) Nubra Deldan Namgyal wrote a letter to the Governor Jammu and Kashmir N N Vohra to drew his attention towards the tragic condition of the local porters of Nubra valley who now and then are engaged in the rescue operations including the recent one started on Feb 3.
In his communication MLA Deldan Namgyal stated that there is never a mention about the work of these porters in any media or by the Indian government.
The letter further pointed out that tragic condition of the local porters of Nubra valley who were engaged in the rescue operation, who played a brave role in rescuing the precious life of a
Jawan and have been part of various operations since 1984 when situation at Siachen Glacier turned volatile and India and Pakistan were on eye for an eye situation. He stated local porters of Nobra valley had laid down their lives while defending the motherland at the harsh heights of Siachen Glacier.
"Ironically many a time, the bodies of many local porters who laid down their lives in the service of the nation were not retrieved reasons better known to authorities, he added.
He further lamented that unfortunately their committed life-saving efforts didn't get proper recognition and are treated merely as certificate of Honour/appreciation by a local unit but are always denied of recognition at national level at all.
Exhibiting solidarity with high altitude porters from Nubra, MLA said many of the local porters had got amputated due to frost bite or other critical injuries but have failed to get any compensation as per Labour Acts of Govt. of India.
He further rued that our Army fails to acknowledge the exceptional works of porters during the visist of Prime Minister or the Defense Minister to Siachen Glacier.
He concluded the letter addressed to Governor of State asserting, "I as their representative, would like to claim for equal recognition to all the local porters who have been playing equal effort in general and an extra-ordinary effort in the recent rescue operation in particular at Siachen Glacier.
"Your are also requested to kindly ensure that the Local Porters engaged at the SIACHEN GLACIER must be paid their salary on time and it must be enhanced by double of current salary, MLA Nubra urged fervently in his letter.
