Abdullah was elected to Assembly from Beerwah constituency in the central Kashmir after he shifted from Ganderbal, a constituency represented by him, his father Dr Farooq Abdullah and grand-father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah since the NC joined the national mainstream following Indira-Sheikh accord in 1975. However, the constituency was once represented by a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Qazi Afzal in 2002 who defeated Omar Abdullah.
