After 18 months affected people move back to flood zone areas | | | Early Times Report
POONCH, Feb 12 : The September 2014 flood inflicted heavy destruction on Poonch city as more than hundred families suffered due to unprecedented deluge and they took refuge at safer places with high hopes of getting adequate relief and compensation to start life afresh. However, with the passage of time the flood victims lost hope of receiving something substantial as relief from the government. Under such a scenario the marooned families left with no option but to return to their original residences falling under the jurisdiction of flood zones declared by the administration. Of late, it has been observed that several families have moved back to their original houses located in declared flood zone areas. A victim Abdul Hamid said that after selling his house in Jammu and Dunnu Gam of Mandi Tehsil, he had constructed a house in Poonch city but the nature's fury in the shape of floods damaged it. Hamid informed that he incurred loss of more than Rs 20 lakhs in September 2014 flood. He further said that he has five children along with a blind son who has been admitted in Blind School Jammu with the support of Deputy Chairman State Legislative Council, Jahangir Hussain Mir. He said that government has not supported them in a proper manner adding that free ration for three months and room rent for six months only were provided till date. A disappointed Hamid further said that after seeing the official apathy, he decided to shift to his family in declared flood zone area near Star Hotel Poonch. Sources said that more than hundred families have gone back to places declared as flood zone areas of Star Hotel, Dungas, Shakar Nagar and Azad Mohalla of Poonch. |
