Guv’s rule to continue for longer period? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 12: Governor NN Vohra's administration on Thursday took a very significant decision on the political appointees in the State. It asked chairmen, vice-chairmen, advocate general, additional advocate general, deputy advocate general, counsels and so on to put in their papers by Friday morning. It didn't sack them; it only politely told these political appointees to resign, as they were appointed by the PDP-BJP coalition Government, which ceased to exist after the demise of Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed. Earlier, NC working president Omar Abdullah and JKPCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir had urged Governor Vohra to ask the political appointees to resign and if they refused to resign, they must be sacked. Their argument was that they had no moral right to hold the official positions after the death of Mufti Sayeed. They were right. The decision of the Governor's administration to ask the political appointees to resign is politically very significant. It indicates that there is no possibility of the Government formation in J&K in the near future. That the Governor's administration took the decision after such a long time only suggests so. The PDP till date has not shown any interest in Government formation, notwithstanding the fact that it has also not declared that it will not join hands with its immediate coalition partner, the BJP. Nor has the PDP over-ruled the possibility of joining hands with the Congress, which repeatedly offered its unconditional support to the PDP, saying it wanted to keep the BJP out of Government. Of course, the PDP gave to the people understand that it will not do business with the NC, its arch political rival in the State. As for the BJP, it cannot get support either from the Congress or from the NC for obvious reasons. The NC has already declared that it couldn't do work with the "communal" BJP. The PDP alone can pave the way for the Government formation in the State, but its pre-condition is that it wants a written assurance from no less than Prime Minister of India that it shall have unbridled powers and that it shall be allowed to implement the agenda of alliance in a time frame. For the PDP, it's a question of its life and death. It just can't afford to form Government with the BJP in the present situation, as it has to cater to the sentiments of its Kashmir constituency. The point is that J&K is slowly but surely heading towards a snap poll. |
