Weather improves in Kashmir, Kargil coldest in region at minus 2 | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 3: Weather witnessed improvement though Western Disturbance (WD) will remain active and sky partly cloudy in the Kashmir Valey, while border town of Kargil in Ladakh region was coldest at minus 2 degree. After recording below normal maximum temperature yesterday due to rain and winds, the minimum temperature in the Kashmir valley witnessed further improvement. However, the weather remained dry and sky was partly cloudy though there is forecast for widespread rain today. A MeT department spokesman said here this afternoon that fairly widespread rain could occur during the next 24 hours in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region and scattered rain in Ladakh during the next 24 hours. According to met department, WD will remain active in the Kashmir valley till April 6 which could result in more rain in the plains and snow on upper heights. Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow, recorded coldest in the region with minimum temperature minus 2 degree celeius. There was also drop in the minimum temperature at Leh in the region, met department said adding against yesterday’s 8.6 degree, that department was 4.4 degree. There could be light rain or snow and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 9 degree and 3 degree respectively during the next 24 hours at Leh. Despite 17 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, 55 km away from in north Kashmir, witnessed slight increase. Against yesterday’s 2.6 degree minimum temperature, it was 2.8 degree, three notches above normal. Famed health resort of Pahalgam also recorded major improvement in the minimum temperature despite 15.5 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours. Against yesterday’s 4.7 degree the minimum temperature there was 6 degree, four notches above normal. Qazigund and Kokernag in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north also witnessed above normal minimum temperature. Kupwara recorded 24.6 mm rainfall. Summer capital, Srinagar, also recorded 4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours resulting in drop in the maximum temperature yesterday and settled at 13.5 degree, five notches below normal. However, the minimum temperature remained above normal. Against yesterdays 9.3 degree, it was 9.5 degree, 3.5 notches above normal. Spokesman said there could be light rain or thunder showers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 15 degree and 6 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in the city. |
