Mehbooba Mufti all set to create history, poised to become first woman CM of JK | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 3: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti is all set to create a record of sorts as she dons the mantle of Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir on Monday at Jammu, winter capital of the State. Mehbooba would be sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of the State by Governor Narendra Nath Vohra in the morning on Monday. The swearing in ceremony of the new Chief Minister would be held at the Raj Bhawan and it is scheduled to start at11 AM. Mehbooba would achieve the distinction of being the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir. The PDP President would be only the second Muslim woman of the country to assume the role of Chief Minister in any State. Syeda Anwara Taimur was the first Muslim woman Chief Minister of the country. Anwara was the Chief Minister of Assam for about seven months from December 6, 1980 to June 30, 1981. Born on May 22, 1959, Mehbooba is the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. She would replace her father as the Chief Minister who passed away while being in the chair on January 7 this year at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Mehbooba would join female politicians like J Jayalalithaa, Vasundhara Raje, Mamata Banerjee and Anandiben Patel who are serving as Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Gujarat at present. Mehbooba is presently the Member of Parliament representing South Kashmir in the Lok Sabha. She was elected to the Wachi constituency in Pulwama in 2008 Assembly elections. However, in the 2014 Assembly elections she did not took part since she was already elected to Lok Sabha from South Kashmir. The PDP President is one of the few female politicians from Kashmir who is recognized across the country. When her father split from Indian National Congress to form Peoples Democratic Party in 1999, many thought she would be the party president. She deferred to her father's experience, however, and became party vice-president. Mehbooba resigned from the Bijbehara Assembly seat and went on to contest the Parliamentary elections in 1999 from Srinagar, where she lost to the sitting member Omar Abdullah. She won the Pahalgam seat in the State Assembly from South Kashmir, defeating Rafi Ahmad Mir, when Assembly elections were held again in 2002. She has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Anantnag seat in 2004 and 2014. The elevation of PDP President to the position of Chief Minister would mean an end to the Governor’s Rule that was imposed in the State on January 8 following the demise of then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Although, the PDP and BJP leaders tried their best to convince Mehbooba to take oath at the earliest, she refused the same saying that since she is under shock she cannot do it. Later on the PDP President toughened her stand and demanded that the Central Government led by BJP should take 'concrete' steps so that the Agenda of Alliance stitched between the coalition partners is implemented in letter and spirit. The latest round of 'bonhomie' was sealed only after the meeting of PDP President with BJP President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at New Delhi in the middle of last month. Following the 'bonhomie' union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the Central Government is ready to walk an extra mile so that the new government in the State feels comfortable. |
