Kupwara killings continue to paralyze normal life in Kashmir | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 16: Normal life continues to be paralyzed across Kashmir valley following the killing of five civilians in the North Kashmir's Kupwara district since April 12. However, the situation by and large remained peaceful across the valley today. Reports said that complete strike was observed in all the major districts, towns and townships of the Kashmir valley. Stone pelting incidents were also reported from some areas and people carried out protest demonstration against the civilian killings. The protestors demanded stern action against the security forces personnel who fired upon the civilians. Complete strike was observed in Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts. In major towns like Chadoora, Charar-I-Sharief, Kangan, Handwara, Langate, Pattan, Tangmarg, Sopore, Magam, Sumbal, Bijbehara, Pampore and Awantipora the strike was complete with movement of people getting restricted. Majority of the shops and commercial establishments remained closed across the Kashmir valley. The government offices witnessed thin attendance with educational institutions both public and private also witnessed very little attendance. Public transport was off the roads with only skeletal movement of private transport being seen. At the same time the authorities continued with restrictions in some of the areas of Srinagar and Kupwara districts. In the Srinagar district the movement of people was restricted in areas coming under police stations of Maisuma, Kralkhud, Maharaj Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari and Safa Kadal police stations. Restrictions were also imposed in Kupwara, Handwara and Langate areas of North Kashmir. Reports said that two persons sustained pellet injuries during protests at Trehgam in Kupwara district. Protests also broke out in the Ganderbal district with groups of agitating youth carrying out stone pelting on police and security forces personnel. Protests and stone pelting incidents were also reported from Naidkhai, Ashtangoo and Papchan areas of North Kashmir's Bandipora district. A police spokesman said that the situation remained largely peaceful across Kashmir valley today although some stray stone pelting incidents were reported from Gojwara, Soura, Narbal crossing in Srinagar, Barsu in Ganderbal and Trehgam in Kupwara. He said the deployments exercised maximum restraint. Ten persons including eight police and security personnel sustained injuries during the stone pelting incidents. It would be in place to mention here that Kashmir valley especially North Kashmir's Kupwara district is on boil since April 12 following the killing of five civilians including a woman in separate firing incidents in Kupwara district. While three persons died on April 12 at Handwara and Langate, the other two were killed in Drugmulla and Nutnussa on April 13 and 15 respectively. |
