Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 18: Massive protests broke out at the campus of University of Kashmir here today against the recent killing of civilians in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. The protesters demanded stern action against the security forces personnel involved in firing on civilians. Reports said that scores of students of the university boycotted their classes and carried out strong protest demonstration against the killing of civilians in Kupwara district last week. The protesting students resorted to high pitch sloganeering and demanded action against the security forces personnel involved in the firing incidents. The protesting students reached the humanities block and sat on a dharna while demanding action against the security forces personnel. The protesters referred to the killing of civilians as a 'cold blooded murder' and said that stern action against security forces personnel should be taken so that such incidents are not repeated in future. The students chanted 'pro-freedom' slogans and slogans against the government. The protesters said that exemplary punishment needs to be meted out to security forces personnel so that some justice is done to the families of four youth and a woman who were killed in firing incidents at Handwara, Langate, Drugmulla and Nutnussa on April 12, 13 and 15 respectively in North Kashmir's frontier district of Kupwara. While the protests were going on in the campus a group of students stood up and displayed a Pakistani flag on this occasion. The protesters were carrying placards in their hands. Most of the students had covered their faces so that they are not recognized by the authorities and as such no action is taken against them for carrying out protests at the campus. Some of the placards displayed by the protesters read 'Stop innocent killings in Kashmir' and 'No to forced Indian Occupation'. The protest demonstration by the students carried on for some hours and the protesters dispersed off peacefully without creating any 'scene' at the campus. At the same time it has been learnt that protests also broke out at Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora. Here too the students held protest demonstration against the civilian killings. The students assembled near the academic block and could be seen holding placards in their hands. They resorted to sloganeering and demanded action against the security forces personnel involved in the killing of five civilians. Meanwhile, District Magistrate, Kupwara, Rajeev Ranjan has appointed Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Handwara, Peer Muzaffar Ahmad, as inquiry officer to probe the firing incident in Handwara which took place on April 12. An official spokesman said that any person or persons acquainted with the facts of the incident and desirous to depose and record their statements have been asked to appear before the inquiry officer at ADM, Handwara office from April 20 to April 30, 2016 during the office hours. |
