SRINAGAR, June 25: Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators in Maisuma area of the summer capital, Srinagar this afternoon. The trouble started when news spread that a youth of the area, who was released by court today has been re-arrested and shifted to Kathua jail. People, mostly youths, took to streets at Maisuma near here, raising slogans against the government. The protesters were stopped from moving towards Budshah Chowk and Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city. Security forces resorted to lathicharge when the processionists refused to disperse and tried to march ahead. However, security forces burst teargas shells to chase away the demonstrators, who were pelting stones from narrow lanes and by-lanes. Shopkeepers closed their shops and traffic was also diverted through other routes. |
