Sharp shooters deployed in Srinagar ahead of ID | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 14: Sharp shooters have been deployed on high rise building in the summer capital, including on all roads leading to Bakshi stadium, venue for the main Independence Day (ID) function in Kashmir, where life remained paralyzed for the 37th day due to curfew, restrictions and strike called by separatists. Meanwhile, security forces today removed several Pakistani flags while some could still be seen hoisted at various places on 4G mobile towers in Kashmir valley, including Srinagar. Strict curfew remained in force in entire Srinagar for the second successive day today to prevent people from marching towards Lal Chowk following a referendum march called by both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation since July 9. Sharp shooters from paramilitary forces and state police personnel have been deployed in and around the Bakshi stadium and all high rise buildings in the civil lines to foil any militant attempt to cause any disturbances during the ID celebrations. Security forces holding automatic weapons were keeping a close watch on buildings, roads and open space around the stadium with the help of binoculars. Trained sniffer dogs and metal detectors were pressed into service since early this morning to search Bakshi entire stadium and nearby roads besides Iqbal park and foot paths. Sources here today said strict curfew will remain in force in entire Srinagar and some parts of Kashmir valley for the third successive day tomorrow to prevent any untoward incident during Independence Day celebration. Hundreds of security force and state police personnel, wearing bullet proof jackets and holding automatic weapons and lathis in their hands remained deployed to strictly implement curfew in Srinagar. Road blocks were erected at Rambagh, Natipora, Bakshi Stadium, Zero Bridge, and all roads leading to Lal Chowk. Budshah bridge, Amira Kadal bridge, Exchange road, Barbarshah road, Samandarbagh road, besides other roads leading to Lal Chowk were also closed with barbed wire. Meanwhile, Shehar-e-Khas (SeK), Down Town and Batmaloo area in the summer capital, Srinagar, and Anantnag town continued to reel under curfew from the last 37 days while restrictions are in force elsewhere in the major towns and tehsil headquarters in Kashmir valley. Massive protests broke out since July 9, after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter in Anantnag in Kashmir valley, where so far 58 persons were killed and over 5000 others were wounded in security force firing bullets, pellets and teargas shells. |
