Give UT status, give separate legislature | Revolt in Ladakh | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 14: Ladakhis are in a fighting mode. It's not just that the Buddhists have turned against the Kashmiri leadership and reiterated their demand seeking not just Union Territory status for their region but also a separate legislature. The Muslims and Christians too have upped their ante and demanded UT status. In fact, the Buddhist, Muslim and Christian leadership of the region have joined hands and approached the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner, Leh. The Ladakhi Buddhist Association, the Anjuman Imamia and Christian Association on August 13 submitted a joint-memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and demanded UT status and a separate legislature. The memorandum, among other things, said: "Don't equate their region with Kashmir, as their geo-political and geo-cultural aspirations are different from those of Kashmiri Muslims. Their region constitutes 69.6 per cent of the state's total land area and that they are against the Kashmiri domination over Ladakh". They further said that "the UT status, coupled with a separate legislature, is the only instrument through which the present apolitical ambivalence could end" and that "it would be short-sighted and counter-productive if New Delhi discusses the Kashmir issue in isolation by ignoring the problems of Ladakh". But more than that, they told the Prime Minister through their memorandum that the Kashmiri leadership could never be the leadership of Ladakh and that "our assimilation with the people of the Valley is next to impossible". All this shows that the people of Ladakh are seething with anger and that they want separation from Kashmir. The memorandum was signed by the LBA chairman, Anjuman Imamia president and president of the Christian community in Leh. |
