Mainstream political parties play to galleries, do little to defuse Kashmir crisis | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 20: The mainstream political parties of the state are playing to the 'galleries' vis-à-vis the situation of Kashmir with none among them seeming to be serious in tiding over the crisis that has engulfed Kashmir since the past 43 days now. Leaders of political parties like Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), National Conference (NC) and Congress are involved in blame game with nobody among them showing any serious effort to solve the Kashmir crisis. The leaders are busy in trading charges with the man on the street feeling the heat and continuing to feel the same. The leaders of NC and Congress these days are busy in castigating the performance of PDP-BJP coalition government in the state and blame them for the present mess in the Kashmir valley. However, none of the NC or Congress leaders could be seen on the ground in order to reach out to the people of valley who are going through tough time. On the other side the legislators of PDP seemed to have 'vanished' in thin air and they too have failed to come up to the expectations of common masses. This is despite the fact that PDP is the single largest party in the state with the party bagging lion's share of the assembly seats in the 2014 assembly elections. PDP's coalition partner BJP too has failed to play a positive role in defusing the crisis in Kashmir valley. The valley legislators of the party including the two of Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone have virtually fled the scene and left the people on the mercy of the Almighty. NC and Congress leaders seem to have forgotten that while they were in power in 2010, 120 youth were killed in the firing of police and security forces during the street protests across Kashmir. Then chief minister and now the working president of NC, Omar Abdullah did not deem it fit to resign at that time and now he is castigating the present chief minister for all the killings that have taken place since July 9 in Kashmir. Political analysts believe that NC and PDP have swapped roles with none of the two parties ready to play a positive role in defusing the Kashmir crisis. The 'healing touch' policy propounded by PDP patron and former chief minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has taken a severe beating during the present agitation. With around 70 deaths already taking place in Kashmir since July 9, the people in Kashmir believe that the slogan has turned hoax as on date. It would be in place to mention here that Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 67 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan. |
