Cops worried about their families | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 20: Amid unrest in Kashmir, the police personnel dealing with ongoing street protests in Kashmir are worried about themselves and their family. Reason various threats from militant ranks and the separatists in the Valley and easy targets of the mob. "Please don't click up my picture. It could land my family in trouble. If the people of my village will see the picture that I am dealing with the protestors they could harm my family," a young policeman told the photo journalist in Srinagar on Friday. These are hundreds of such policemen who are worried about their family. Since July 9, the houses of many policemen have been burnt by the mob in various parts of the Valley. Families' members of a policeman were also attacked by a mob in Pulwama, who sustained serious injuries. Several incidents of attacks on policemen and their residences have taken place for the last 44 days. There has been open threats to the families of policemen in Kashmir from the militant groups, separatists and some other people. At some places, the family of these policemen fearing trouble have abandoned their homes and live with relatives homes at some other places. "We are doing our duties but why should somebody harm our families," said Irshad, a policeman from Baramulla. He is among thousands of policemen whose job is to curb the protests that have been going on in Kashmir since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani, on July 8. Another police man posted at police headquarters in Srinagar said the families of policemen are some places easy targets of mobs. "I have to call five times a day to enquire about their safety," a police man hailing from south Kashmir said. The policemen said the separatists have made their names public and asked people for social boycott with them has further aggravated them problem. Families of some police man had approached separatists not to make their names public. People in many areas of the Valley have also named police officers, and warned them of dire consequences, in the ongoing round of violence. In Sopore town, warnings were issued to various police officials in the form of graffiti on roads. "(Policeman name with held), a warning for you. Your death is our mission," said a graffiti near Super Bazar in Sopore. |
