Government ready to fulfil demands of tanker owners | Fuel in valley available for 4 days only | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 2: Appealing oil tanker owners association to resume fuel supply to Kashmir, the government Friday admitted that only four days of fuel is available in the valley. Jammu and Kashmir Oil Tanker Owners' Association has suspended supplies to Kashmir after attacks on their trucks and drivers. . "Whatever stocks of fuel are available in valley "right now" would come to an end within four days. From 27th of August oil supply had not reached to the valley. We understand that the oil tankers are being attacked in most parts of the valley and with the result they stopped the supply," Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali told early TIMES over phone. However while appealing association to resume fuel supply to valley; the minister maintained that government is ready to fulfill all their demands. "We are ready to provide full security to their trucks. They should resume the supply and whatever their demands are, we will consider them," he said. The minister said that the scarcity of the petrol and diesel will affect not only the vehicular services but will bring "everything" to a halt. "How could people reach to the offices and other places? I appeal people not to harm the truck drivers," Meanwhile reports which reached to early TIMES said that almost 90 per cent of the petrol pumps in the Valley were dry on Friday. "Out of depots of three Oil Marketing Companies in Kashmir, two have already gone dry," one the owner of the petrol pump said. There are 155 retail petrol/diesel outlets in the Valley operated by four companies namely Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Indo- Burma Petroleum Corporation Limited. The petrol pumps in Srinagar on Friday witnessed huge rush of 'panicky' customers. "From 4 AMthere was huge rush of people," said Iqbal Ahmad employee of Rifiqee Petrol Pump near Qamarwari. "The strike has caused great panic in people. At our petrol pump the customers who used to take petrol for Rs 100 or Rs 200 daily today filled up the tanks. Since last two days we see people spending ten times more on petrol and diesel," said one of the petrol pump owner at Bypass. Sources said that if the strike continues the telecom companies will also not be able to run their towers without fuel, as a result of which the cell service in the Valley will also get affected. |
