Estates Deptt forgets Poonch House post Darbar move | | | Vinod Sharma
Jammu, Sept 2: The Estates department has completely ignored the Poonch House after the Secretariat moved to Srinagar in May. Garbage, stray animals roaming freely and wild bushes can be spotted in every nook and corner of the Ahata Poonch House, which speaks volumes of the negligence ofEstate department. A local resident Ramesh Sharma of Panjthirthi said, "Foul smell emanates from the area whenever we pass through it. Our repeated requests to maintain cleanliness fall on the deaf ears of the department officials", Sharma said, adding that the surroundings were unhygienic and can easily spread infection among the residents. He said that Estate department officials were Kashmir centric as whenever the Kashmir based employees were putting in these quarters, basis amenities were provided smoothly, but during summers, none cared for these quarters. Another resident Koshalya Devi said that when the Darbar move employees were there, the sweepers engaged by Estate department routinely collected the garbage and cleaned the surroundings, but none was bothered about the quarters and the people residing there after Darbar move. "Once in a week, the garbage is lifted but the parks are never cleaned or maintained by the department. Large grown bushes and grass pose serious threat as reptiles are found roaming there", she said and appealed the department to clean the area on routine basis. When this correspondent visited the Poonch house Panjthirthi, the employees present there said, "When Darbar move employees are in Jammu, the Estate department sweepers' are responsible for cleanliness of area but after Darbar move, the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness lies with Jammu Municipal Corporation". Due to the dual policy of Estate Department in maintaining the cleanliness of Poonch House for six months and forgetting it for next six months, the locals of area are badly suffering. Deputy Director of Estates department Satish Sharma said that given the shortage of employees, the department has engaged some NGO workers. "We have a lot of area to clean and maintain and workers are deputed to particular areas on shift basis", he said, adding that presently there were negligible number of people staying in the quarters and after Darbar move there would be no problem. |
