Authorities impose curfew, restrictions to scuttle Ashura processions | | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Oct 12: Although, the authorities imposed curfew and restrictions in Srinagar in order to scuttle the Ashura processions still then some of the Shia Muslims managed to city centre and carry out the Ashura procession. Reports said that scores of Shia Muslims reached the city centre on the Exchange Road and raised slogans while carrying out an Ashura procession. The Shia mourners tried to march towards the Zadibal area in downtown where the main Ashura procession is carried out. However, sensing trouble the police personnel posted their immediately swung into action and arrested the Shia mourners. Reports said that police fired teargas shells to break up yet another Ashura procession near Tourist Reception Centre (TRC). The mourners tried to carry out a procession but police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the mourners. At the same time a huge Muharram procession was carried out in Bota Kadal to Zadibal area. Thousands of Shias participated and remembered sacrifices of Karbala martyrs. Authorities had imposed curfew in areas falling under police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Zadibal and Soura in downtown Srinagar. Elsewhere, restrictions under Section 144 were imposed in order to ensure that the Ashura processions are not allowed. For the past more than 25 years the state government is not allowing the people from the different areas of Kashmir to take part in the main Ashura procession held at Zadibal. The same has been condemned by the people and politicians across the political spectrum. A police spokesman said that in view of the sensitivity of certain areas curfew was imposed in some police Stations of the old city. However, there was no curfew elsewhere across the valley. The situation remained largely peaceful although a couple of stone pelting incidents were reported. "Today being 10th Muharram number of processions were taken out across Kashmir in which thousands of people participated. Many of these processions culminated peacefully while some were going on till filing of this report. Increased flow of traffic and movement of people continued in most areas of Srinagar and other parts of valley," said the police spokesman. The police spokesman said that vendors and shopkeepers were seen doing their usual business in the markets and towns of the valley. Keeping continued pressure on 'trouble mongers' and 'miscreants', 37 persons involved in crimes of disruption of peace and movement of people have been arrested by police across Kashmir. |
