Fear, insecurity, arson, extortion hallmarks of Kashmir unrest | Handing over Valley to Army only option | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 12: As the days have turned into weeks and weeks into months, there seems no end to ongoing Kashmir unrest, which has brought life in the restive Valley to a grinding halt. People in Kashmir are defying the protest calendar to come out from the vicious circle of protests and shutdowns which has been woven around them by the separatists at the behest of Pakistan. Sources told Early Times that protesters, who were hit by pellets are running from pillar to post to seek financial assistance as the henchmen of separatists have refused to help them. "Many youth who were hit by pellets need immediate financial help but the people who pushed them out in open to face the pellets have turned their backs towards them," sources added. Most of the injured youth belong to poor families and cannot afford the treatment cost. "Family members of these youth are cursing separatists and the elements, who have ruined the lives of their wards," sources added. They said, "Mainstream politicians could have played a vital role at this point of time by coming forward and helping the injured youth but the mainstream politicians are not in touch with the people and are not aware about the ground realities. If they (mainstream politicians) make an attempt to help the people at this point of time lot can be achieved and it would help in breaking the calendar issued by the separatists." A Kashmir watcher said, "Separatists and their bosses sitting in Pakistan asking their men to resort to loot and arson have created fear among the people. During the past few days autos, private vehicles, shops and schools have been burnt. Even there are reports that miscreants are barging into the houses of people and are resorting to extortion. Shopkeepers who are defying the calendar are facing threats. Lawlessness and anarchy is prevailing in Kashmir and situation is turning from bad to worse." He said, "The Government of India and state Government should explore the option of handing over Kashmir to Army for at least one month. Police and paramilitary forces are trying their best but they need some help. If the GoI and the state government fail to take stern measures the possibilities of normalcy being restored look bleak." An analyst said, "Despite Police cracking whip on ring leaders and known criminals, who were at the forefront of the present agitation in Kashmir, lot needs to be done to instill confidence among people who are feeling choked and depressed due to the prevailing threat and insecurity." He said, "Wherever police and paramilitary forces are deployed those area are calm but the areas which are not manned are facing the brunt. If government fails to act achieving a breakthrough looks difficult." |
