Villagers targeted for ‘opening mouth’ before media | No end to tyranny of Sunderbani Police | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 28: A day after reports of harassment to the villagers of Nahoti in Rajouri district, who had been booked by police in a fake FIR, and summoned to police station Sunderbani, The visibly frightened villagers told Early Times that today a police team visited the area and harassed them for having "shared truth with media." The cops asked the victims and other villagers to visit the police station "without fail by tomorrow morning or face consequences." The villagers were told by police that apart from other victims, their Sarpanch Teerath Ram Sharma has been booked in the FIR. The cops also said one Amarnath Sharma son of Chatru Ram has been booked in the fake FIR, though he was not present in the village on the fateful day. This was when the village Sarpanch got up to raise voice against anarchy of police telling the cops villagers would not be scared any further but would move Jammu High Court praying for their safety. Last month in a bid to save some "influential goons" enjoying patronage in the corridors of power, the police had filed a case against poor peasants whose companion was attacked. As per the villagers, in September a group of goons wielding influence in Sunderbani attacked a group of poor peasants who resisted to the "Gunda Raaj." Though the victims rushed to police station seeking registration of FIR against the goons, the police ended up booking the victims as the other party enjoyed influence in the corridors of power. Today when the police raided the area, the villagers told police that would block the Rajouri Jammu highway should the government fail to revoke the fake FIR. "Now we will fight for justice even if it means to sacrifice our lives... We cannot play puppets at the hands of corrupt police officials. We will pray before High Court as to why corrupt police officials who are hand in glove with goons, close to corridors of power are not reprimanded," the villagers said. As already reported by Early Times, the victims had threatened to commit suicide if police failed to revoke the fake FIR. |
