As schools burn, remain closed; DSEK changes timings | Kashmir Unrest | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 28: It seems Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has forgotten that schools in the Kashmir region are lying closed for the past four months. On Friday DSEK issued an order stating: "It is hereby ordered that the new school timings, both in respect of government as well as recognized private schools, within the Municipal limits of the Srinagar city, shall be 10 am to 3 pm and outside the Srinagar Municipal limits 11 am to 4 pm with effect from November 1, 2016. The instructions shall be adhered to strictly by all the concerned institutions." It's in place to mention here that schools in the Kashmir division were closed on July 9, 2016 when the self styled commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter in south Kashmir's Kokernag area. Since then schools have not reopened for even a day. "The DSEK has made a mockery of the system by issuing the order of change in school timings. Timings could have changed when schools would have been open. There is no fun of changing the timings of the closed schools," said a teacher. A critic said, "This shows that people at the helm don't use their common sense. Had they used their common sense they would not have issued this order. Before changing the school timings they have to issue an order stating that schools have been reopened." He said, "Miscreants are burning the school buildings in Kashmir and are leaving no stone unturned to terrorize the people so that they don't send their children to the schools. Instead of formulating a strategy to deal with the miscreants the babus in the Education department are issuing circulars. It's strange." A Kashmir watcher said, "It is unfortunate that a handful of people are hell bent upon destroying the education system in Kashmir. Setting school buildings on fire is a dangerous trend and the government should look for ways and means to reopen the schools so that hundreds of school going children who have been forced to stay at home are able to move out and pursue their studies." The Director General of Police (DGP) Law and Order S P Vaid told a Kashmir based news agency that all the Station House Officers (SHOs) have been directed to nab the culprits involved in burning of schools. "Since the large number of police men are busy in maintaining law and order, how can we expect that they will also guard all the schools? At this juncture, it is not possible for us to deploy police in every school," he added. |
