Chief Commissioner interacts with businessmen, hoteliers of Katra | | | Early Times Report
Katra, Feb 17: Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Amritsar Narender Singh, who is on a two-day visit to Jammu, today held an interactive cum awareness session with the top taxpayers, hoteliers and representatives of Hotel and various Trade Associations at Katra. During this interaction, he enlightened the gathering about the role of the taxpayers in the building of nation and stated that paying taxes honestly in itself is the biggest symbol of patriotism. He also laid emphasis upon Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Widening of Taxbase through the co-operation of various stakeholders cum taxpayers and requested people to promote tax awareness amongst the non-taxpayers, who are liable for paying taxes, considering it as their social responsibility. The Chief Commissioner Income Tax deliberated upon various Income Tax provisions which, over the period, have now became very simple and liberal. The assessee assesses his income himself without any compulsion or coercion and files his return which the department mostly accepts and assesses in a routine manner without subjecting the data reflected to any scrutiny. This is verifiable from the fact that less than 0.1% of the returns filed are subjected to scrutiny by the Department that too in those cases where credible information is available with the department. He further stated that the Department in the past has given ample opportunities to the citizens to come clean in their income disclosures and honestly disclose their income and pay taxes for effective progress of the Nation's economic health. The Department has in possession credible financial data obtained through various data mining techniques and it was impressed upon by the Chief Commissioner that the people should voluntarily declare true and correct income to avoid any punitive action from the Department. During the session, it was also emphasized that as per the data available with the Department, huge number of taxpayers are paying self assessment tax while filing the returns after the end of the financial year rather than paying their due advance taxes during the financial year in which the income is earned. The Chief Commissioner advised the august presence to pay their advance taxes as per the provisions of the law. Various queries were raised by the eminent tax payers and representatives of trade associations which were listened patiently and satisfactorily resolved by the visiting senior authority and other officers of the department. Speaking on the mission "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" launched by the Prime Minister, the Chief Commissioner impressed upon the public to keep not only their houses or hotels clean but also their surroundings. SK Sharma, Addl. Commissioner of Income Tax, also addressed the distinguished audience and advised them to come forward honestly for the cause of nation which in other words reflects their true love for the nation. |
