Do not question Akhtar's wisdom | | | If opposition leaders, expecially those who do not relish the wisdom of a senior Minister, Naeem Akhtar, question his statement in which he said since China had supported Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) the level of violence had gone up in Kashmir. Akhtar may not be wrong despite the fact that the state intelligence agencies and the police do not believe in the theory that Naeem has propounded. One thing has to be kept in consideration why JeM activists have gone on the offensive and have carried out major incidents of violence. If those who question the validity of Akhtar's statement believe that the Minister's aim was to force New Delhi to initiate dialogue with Islamabad and the Kashmir separatists it is a tall order and a manifestation of wishful thinking. Well not only the police but intelligence agencies including the Army functionaries had, hitherto, denied that Al Qaeeda had set its foot in Kashmir. But these agencies proved wrong when the outfit issued a warning to separatists not to play a secular role. Jammu and Kashmir Police and intelligence agencies in the State do not have any reports linking Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit to China. These agencies do not have reports linking JeM to China but at the same time question the wisdom of Naeem Akhtar. Those who know Akhtar from close quarters know it well that Akhtar is a voracious reader of books, magazines and newspapers and his statement could not based on his whims and wishful thinking. Despite the fact that state Government has contradicted Akhtar's statement, Beijing seems to have adopted JeM and that should have been the reason for JeM activists to be on the offensive. Hitherto, Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-i-Toiba would be treated as dreaded terrorist organizations but it could have been the result of Chinese help, in terms of finances and weapons, JeM activists have become as dreaded militant outfit as LeT. Akhtar, in an interview has said Beijing had adopted the Jaish-e-Muhammad, the outfit responsible for various militant attacks in Jammu Kashmir and across India. However, in absence of any reports from the ground about Chinese involvement in Kashmir militancy, the minister's posturing is seen as PDP extending support to its rightwing alliance partner BJP and its government at New Delhi that in its application to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) had made a bid to place the JeM founder, Masood Azhar on the sanctions list that would have subjected him to an assets freeze and travel ban. The Director General Police too has contradicted Akhtar's assertions on the ground that the police do not have any such report. A former Defence Minister, George Fernandes was once asked which country is the biggest enemy of India and without wasting any time he had stated that China and not Pakistan "is India's biggest enemy." Akhtar has stated that all the big attacks inside J&K or even outside during last more than three years are attributed to Jaish-e-Muhammad, a group led by Masood Azhar. How can one not see that he has been adopted by China? There are reports of some action taken against Hafiz Saeed. What about Masood Azhar? Even a lesser figure like Salahudin has been listed as a global terrorist in UN but the 'Great Wall of China' has been erected around Azhar. China has been regularly vetoing attempts to designate him as a terrorist in United Nations. Such things don't happen without reason. Why only him? Why not others? Why didn't China block such moves in UN against other people? The China connection needs to be understood." Despite valid arguments dished out by Akhtar his remarks are being seen as a desperate attempt of the minister to woo Islamabad and Hurriyat and revive his party's dwindling image following massive human rights violations carried by his government in Kashmir since it assumed power. If Akhtar has other plans of forcing BJP led NDA Government to resume talks with Pakistan and separatists one cannot but laugh over this allegation. Even New Delhi has been trying to persuade super powers to support its move to declare Azhar as a global terrorist. Why should it do so? New Delhi's concern over Chinese role in promoting JeM to level one terrorist outfit needs to be viewed in the light of Akhtar's statement. |
