Modified bike silencers creates panic in Udhampur, locals demands action | | | Arun Jasrotia Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, Feb 27: Youth in Udhampur continue to flout traffic norms and indulge in noise pollution by making certain modifications in their motorcycle silencers altered to produce jarring noise. The alter silencers of their bikes generate high decibel noise (silencer blast), which create noise pollution, disturb the peaceful atmosphere as well as commuters but the concerned authorities including police as well as traffic police have failed to take notice of this violation and no action is being taken against the violators. Rules specify that if a vehicle's silencer emits over 80 decibels it is considered to be causing noise pollution. "Tampering with silencers is a violation of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 119 and 120, and invites a penalty but who cares," said Vishav while talking to Early Times. "Youth create 'silencer blast' by switching the engine off and on when the motorcycle runs at a high speed, resulting in the emanation of a firecracker-like sound from the engine. Sudden blast creates panic among passers-by. It can lead to road mishaps. They pose a threat to the health of senior citizens, pregnant women and children, besides other citizens," he added. Locals want that a ban should be imposed on modified silencers. They also said that some strict action should be taken against those who modify silencers. |
