Anantnag: Anti-encroachment drive along National Highway launched | | | Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, Mar 26: In order to clear illegal constructions on along new alignment of National-Highway, Anantnag district administration on Monday launched a demolition drive. The drive was launched following a report by Early Times. Eyewitness however said that most of the constructions belonging to influential weren't touched. "Some tin sheds apparently constructed by poor people were demolished by the Revenue team during the drive," Deen Imran, a videographer, who accompanied the team, said. He said that concrete constructions like shops and malls were damaged partially. "Shutters of some shopping complexes were damaged also," he informed. Eyewitness said that at some places people who have raised these constructions in connivance with district Revenue authorities, resisted and didn't allow the team to carry on the demolition drive. They questioned the action of authorities and asked them that why administration didn't stop them at first and informed them that raising construction along the highway. Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR) Syed Shabir Ahmad on being contacted said that a total of twelve structures were damaged during the drive. "Demolition drive will continue till all illegal constructions aren't cleared," he added. As reported earlier, army has written a letter to civil administration and requested them to stop construction activity along the highway. The army has requested Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Inspector General of Police to pass on the directions to their sub-ordinate officials for stopping the construction activity on highway. The army has said that the issue of constructions all along the new alignment of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was discussed at Corps Group Meeting at HQ 15 Corps on October 6 last year. The army units stationed all along the highway have done a ground recce along the alternate alignment of highway and found construction activities going on. The army has also shared photographs of shops, commercial structures and structures raised by locals as well as government departments and shared other relevant details with the civil administration. The state government had already enacted 'The Jammu and Kashmir Prohibition or Conversion of Agriculture land for Non-Agriculture purposes Act, 2011' to arrest the menace the conversion of agriculture land for Non-Agriculture purposes in the state. Revenue Minister last year also informed Jammu and Kashmir state assembly that Section 133-A of J&K land Revenue Act also empowers the revenue authorities on ground to keep a check on conversion of land. However in this case the revenue authorities as miserably failed to check the land conversion despite state declaring the highway 'No Construction Zone'. |
