4/14/2018 11:51:49 PM
Early Times Report

Rajouri, Apr 14: Residents of Darhal tehsil in Rajouri district have expressed resentment against the state government for ignoring their area while announcing new degree colleges for Jammu province.
Civil society of Darhal tehsil supported by various social organisations, started indefinite agitation in favour of their demand and also observed complete shutdown today. They have also decided to organise peaceful 'Rajouri Chalo ' rally on April 16 in favour of their demand. Reliable sources said that Darhal was deliberately ignored by the state government reportedly on the behest of local political leaders who have ignored the Darhal areain the past and in order to regain the losing ground they may take credit in the near future for the opening of degree college keeping in view of the next assembly elections.
People of Darhal have constituted a Joint Action Committee (JAC) to spearhead their struggle.
Advocate Zahid Sarfraz Malik, convener JAC and Mohd Iqbal Malik, senior Congress leader and others said Darhal tehsil comprising of more than sixty thousand population have 200 government and private school including 20 higher and high schools having more than ten thousand students. "Ninety percent population of Darhal depends on agriculture, rearing animals and labour work and can't afford higher education of their children at Rajouri/Jammu or at other places. Completing just secondary education means 'good for nothing' and all their efforts go waste" said Zahid Malik. He added more than eighty percent students drop their studies after 10+2 in the absence of Degree College and join their families in domestic activities thus bringing the Darhal Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER)to less than 1% as compare to Rajouri district's GER of6.2% Iqbal Malik said, Darhal fulfils all the requisite conditions for establishment of Degree College and even was on No.5 in the feasibility report obtained by the State Government.
The government has deliberately ignored our area, said protesters and added their agitation will continue till the government announces degree colleges for Darhal. The agitation was supported by Darhal Constituency Development Forum, Youth Club, Senior Citizen Forum, Haq-Insaff Council, Kisan Parvarish Sty and by the civil society.
