Early Times Report

Rajouri, Apr 14: People of different wards here have offered opposition to cellphone towers and saw mills in residential areas, citing health reasons.
Inhabitants of ward No 5 and Pahari hostel dwellers have raised their voice against the officials for allowing installation of cellular towers and saw mills in the area without caring for their health of more than 150 students putting up in hostel and people living near towers.
It is pertinent to mention here that saw mill owners have used wall of Pahari hostel illegally while the bank has provided him Loan of Rs 25 lakh and owner has erected shed already using for car parking and using wall of pahari Hostel.
People demanded vigilance inquiry against Bank that sanctioned loan and forest and pollution control board that issued NOC illegally using corrupt practices and against those agencies responsible for issuing NOC to install cellphone tower.
"There is nothing against mobile companies and we should appreciate the development in this sector but there are certain rules and regulations that need to be followed for setting up a cellular tower in any locality," said Shahbaz Ahmed and Rajinder Kumar.
"Operators have to get the requisite permission from the concerned local authorities before installation of towers, but the latter should also check the emission level so that it does not affect the health of those living in their close vicinity," they said.
According to experts continuous exposure to a cell tower located within 50 mt of residential area may carry the cancer risk and besides it people living near the mobile towers face other disorders like extreme fatigue, headaches, sleep disorders, memory loss, depression, hearing loss, joint pains, skin problems and cardiovascular problems.
"Mushrooming of cell towers in localities must be stopped," said Mohammad Atif and Mahant Singh, adding that those violating norms to this effect must be identified and punished. Residents of ward No 5 and Pahari hostel Naresh Singh called upon the authorities concerned to find out who had given permission for erection of cellphone tower in their locality. According to the revised DoT guidelines for ground-based as well as rooftop towers, there shall be no nearby buildings right in front of the antenna with height comparable to the lowest antenna.
