In 2017, CBI arrested IGP, 8 policemen in connection with custodial death of key accused | Rape, murder case of Shimla school girl | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 17: The rape and murder case of an eight old nomad girl in Kathua district has shocked the entire Jammu region. Everyone is demanding that the perpetrators should be punished. People of Kathua district took to the streets demanding that case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation for the probe. But their demand was turned down and no stone was left unturned to give a communal colour to the incident. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Not many people have faith in police and in the past many states have handed over such cases to CBI for the probe. But unfortunately J&K government remained adamant on its stand and did not handover the case to the CBI." While recalling the case of the custodial death of a key accused in the brutal rape and murder of a school girl in Kotkhai in Shimla district on July 4, 2017, he said the CBI arrested eight Himachal Pradesh policemen, including an inspector general. It It may be recalled the CBI had arrested the policemen, including a senior IPS officer and deputy superintendent of police, in connection with the death of Nepalese labourer Suraj Singh in the Kotkhai police station lock-up on July 18, 2017. At the time, it was alleged that he had been brutally beat n up and murdered by another accused Rajender Singh. Rajender and Suraj. They were among six accused arrested for the rape and murder of a minor girl on July 4. The girl's severely injured body was recovered from a forest on July 6, leading to widespread protests in Shimla. The IGP was head of the special investigation team (SIT) formed by the state to probe the rape and murder. The DSP was initially probing the case before the SIT took over. The Himachal Pradesh government was forced to handover the case to CBI as many people had alleged that there was an attempt to shield the real culprits and that there was an attempt to destroy evidence as well. On the directions of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, the CBI registered a case on July 22, 2017 and started the probe following which the startling revelations came to fore. An observer said, "The Jammu and Kashmir government should have taken a cue from other states to ensure that no one points fingers at the probe. By not ordering the CBI probe a notion has been created that J&K government was in a hurry." He said, "Given the track record of the police many people believe that CBI probe should be ordered to cross the investigations which have been carried out by the Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police." |
