Jammu, May 4: Yet another scam has surfaced in the Jammu University. This time, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed in the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) were mysteriously replaced to save purchase committee members following an explanation sought by the Raj Bhawan into the matter. JU insiders revealed that the Raj Bhawan had sought explanation from varsity authorities when the media highlighted the matter. "The purchase committee, compromising the quality, gave go-ahead to installation of CCTVs of an allegedly, inferior company", the insiders said "The Raj Bhawan acting swiftly, sought explanation from the university", the sources said. They said that to save members of the purchase committee, who are hands in glove with the supplier, changed some of the cameras. "If the installed CCTV cameras were under scanner, why were they replaced?" the sources asked. They alleged that the VC hatched conspiracy with 'dummy' director of the DDE and got the cameras replaced. In reply to an RTI application, the JU's PIO had admitted that payment for the installed CCTV cameras has been released due to difference in the specification of the cameras. "But the question arises that why the purchase committee gave its nod without checking the quality/specification of CCTVs", the sources said. "Why no action was taken against the committee for misappropriating the funds meant for students' welfare?" The JU had informed through another RTI application that CCTV cameras were installed in the old and new building of DDE involving an expenditure of Rs. 1, 59,182, as per the approval of the varsity authorities. The sources said that CCTV cameras were purchased by administration from local funds of DDE which is "totally inappropriate and misuse of local funds collected from students for their welfare." |
