Former Dy CM Nirmal Singh demands deportation of Rohingyas | Major development | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 4: A major political development has taken place in the state. Former Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Nirmal Singh has come out openly against the illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants settled in Jammu and Samba districts. He has demanded their deportation, saying their presence in Jammu could pose a grave threat to Jammu's and national security, which the country can't afford. Demanding the relocation of Rohingyas from Jammu areas, Nirmal Singh has said: "Rohingya should leave Jammu…They are videshis (foreigners). They should be shifted somewhere else. We want that they should be shifted to other places as they can be exploited here by anti-national elements as they live close to the border. The Congress rehabilitated them for vote bank politics". What the BJP leader said was significant in the sense that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the PDP have consistently opposed the demand in Jammu for the deportation of the Rohingyas from Jammu. In fact, the Chief Minister had told the Legislative Assembly in 2017 that "the deportation of Rohingyas from Jammu would not be appropriate". The BJP leader's statement is significant in another sense as well. It was under his chairmanship that the state government had appointed a Cabinet Sub-Committee charged with the responsibility of looking into the whole issue and come out with definite recommendations. This Cabinet Sub-Committee met only once and it suggested or recommended nothing. The government had taken the stand that since the matter was under the consideration of the Supreme Court, it would not be appropriate to speak on this issue. Earlier, another former state BJP president Ashok Khajuria (MLC) made a similar statement and demanded that "Rohingyas and Bangladeshis be deported from Jammu forthwith as they were a threat to the Jammu's identity" and that the "land policy of the state government was anti-Hindu". He was referring to the February 14, 2018 minutes of the Tribal Affairs Department which had directed the Deputy Commissioners of Jammu, Kathua, Samba and Udhampur and IGP Jammu not to disturb/dislocate members of the tribal community occupying forest land without the permission of the Tribal Ministry. It is clear that something is brewing at the BJP's headquarters at Trikuta Nagar, Jammu. |
