Stone-pelters kill tourist in Srinagar
2nd incident of its kind in 1 week; who says Valley is safe for tourists?
5/8/2018 12:14:33 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 7: A young tourist from Chennai died after a bus carrying tourists was attacked by stone pelters in the outskirts of Srinagar on Monday, in a second incident of its kind in one week, putting a question mark on the state government's repeated assertions that Kashmir is safe for tourists.
Police said the bus was on its way to Gulmarg when a mob attacked it with stones at Narbal. The incident took place on Monday morning.
The injured tourist R. Thirumani, 22, was moved to a hospital at around 10:30 am with serious injuries on the nose and forehead. He was slipped into a coma and died at around 8:30 pm at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar.
A police officer said Thirumani had started vomiting. He said the doctors tried to resuscitate him but he died. He said the police has registered an FIR and launched a hunt to nab the attackers.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti went to the hospital after she was informed of the tourist's death. She met the parents of the man.
Director general of police Shesh Paul Vaid said: "Some two-three vehicles had come under a bout of stone-pelting in which the tourist from Chennai died."
The man was travelling in a group of 40 people towards the ski resort of Gulmarg when they were targeted by stone-pelters, according to reports. A local girl too was injured in the stone-pelting.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in his tweet: "This young man from Chennai died in my constituency & while I don't support these goons, their methods or their ideology I'm deeply, deeply sorry that this happened at all & that too in an area I've been proud to represent since 2014."
Abdullah added: "We've killed a tourist by throwing stones at the vehicle he was travelling in. Let's try and wrap our heads around the fact that we stoned a tourist, a guest, to death while we glorify these stone pelters & their methods."
Seven tourists were injured in the stone pelting attack on tourist bus on May 1 in south Kashmir.
On May 2, the stone pelters had also targetted a school bus in Shopian in which a student was injured.
