Govt promotes night landing at Srinagar airport: SRS | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 15: Despite the government claims of promoting Jammu as a preferred tourist destination, successive regimes have failed to even provide air connectivity to the winter capital. Decades on, the only airport here awaits long-pending expansion and the government decided to make available the night landing facility at the Srinagar airport while didn't utter a word for such a facility for the airport in Jammu. Chief Minister, Meh-booba Mufti in a high-level meeting said that the Srinagar airport would soon be having night landing facility for which all preparations are being done by concerned agencies. The meeting was informed that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has granted necessary permission for operating night flights and the necessary infrastructural up gradation in this regard is being done by the Airport Authority of India and other State agencies. The Chief Minister directed completion of all these upgradations within a month's time so that the facility is thrown open in view of the tourist season in the Kashmir Valley. She directed immediate release of Rs 3.86 crore for meeting the expenses of raising ancillary infrastructural facilities for night hours at the Airport for the convenience of travellers and the staff. Shri Ram Sena State President Rajiv Mahajan said that Jammu Airpot's short and rough runway pose serious threat to lives of passengers. He also said that "Extremely hazardous plight of Jammu Airport who's short and rough runway is not only a nightmare for pilots but poses serious threat to lives and safety of passengers and the government had not only neglected long pending extension of the existing runway at the Jammu Airport from 6700 feet to 8000 feet as repeated warned by Aviation experts but also displayed criminal negligence in ensuring proper maintenance of the Airport thus putting the very lives of passengers to jeopardy". Making out a strong case for up gradation of Jammu Airport on the analogy of Srinagar Airport, Rajiv Mahajan said that 1.20 crore pilgrims visit Mata Vaishino Devi Shrine every year besides huge rush of other pilgrims and tourists which could further escalate if air traffic facilities are improved. He further said while the Modi led govt. was talking of developing modern and smart cities, Jammu was being deprived of even the basic facilities desperately needed for safety and security of the people. |
