Workplace bullying should be stopped
Vivek Koul5/28/2018 12:14:52 AM
Workplace bullying has now become a common practice in India and many companies and organizations inadvertently perpetuate a bullying culture by failing to take a proactive approach to anti-bullying policies, or lacking a framework and process for victimized parties to follow to report a problem. It is indeed very sad that workplace bullying has assumed alarming proportions and has become now the talk of the town. Bullying can affect us in one way or the other but its ramifications are very serious in nature. Workplace bullying is basically repeated, intentional behavior directed at an employee that is intended to degrade, humiliate, embarrass, or otherwise undermine their performance. It can come from colleagues, supervisors, or management, and is a real problem for workers at all levels. Workplace bullying can be discreet, hard to define and challenging to explain to another party, which means that many victims feel powerless to take action. Being pinned into a corner by an angry boss shouting and jabbing a finger into one's face would obviously be widely recognized as bullying, but many manifestations of workplace bullying are far subtler. It has been highly observed that employees are being mentally harassed and psychologically beleaguered by their bosses in the private as well as public sectors. Reports are also coming from various private organizations, industries, private firms, agencies, schools or other private institutions of our city where employees are being retained to work for extra hours to complete their assigned targets. This can be also seen as a sort bullying at workplace. As per latest reports, a number of complaints have been received against affiliated schools alleging payment of partial salary, delay in disbursement of salary and allowances, promotion and non-welfare measures for teachers, retaining the teaching and non teaching staff after school hours, engaging them in the non-education activities. Retaining teaching and non teaching staff after working hours in a school or in any educational institution in itself contradicts the rules and regulations set by the governing boards and governing bodies. These days various private schools running in the Jammu city (both CBSE affiliated and State board affiliated) are putting their employees to extreme hardships and inconveniences by forcing them to work extra hours without incentives. This can make an employee frustrated and annoyed. An employee working for 9 hours a day in an office is understandable but an employee forced to work for 10 or 12 a day is well beyond the comprehension of normal human mind. This sort of bullying can make one scared, stressed, anxious or depressed. This also can make an employee less motivated to come to work and do the job. Life outside work becomes stressful and the family relationship might also get strained if this sort of bullying can't be restrained and controlled. The schools are least adhering the administrative and working rules, regulations and the protocols set by the CBSE or JKBOSE. The Bosses and administrators of the schools have done concoction to already defined rules and regulations set by the governing bodies and thereby are treating their employees as slaves which in turn make the environment non-conducive. To achieve targets, administrators and bosses of these educational institutions force employees to work for extra hour this in turn has direct influence on the mind, spirit and physical health of the employees. This all makes the working environment very hostile and harsh. This sort of bullying by administrators should have to be eradicated from the grass root level. An employee should be treated like an employee because an employee is also a human being like the bosses and Superiors. It doesn't matter at which hierarchy an employee belongs, the thing that matter is how much an employee is dedicated and honest towards his work and accomplishments. Generally, it has been seen and noticed that a new comer in any organization or in any office is not being treated like an employee but only a slave and nothing else. Everyone knows that workplace bullying is bad, but a large number of companies and bosses mistakenly believe that bullying is simply not an issue within their company or under their watch, so they don't pay the issue much mind. Anti-bullying laws and policies needs to be implemented at the workplace and those indulging in bullying activities should be charged under law and harsh punishment should be given to them. This way bullying can be eradicated to some extent. To stamp out the bullying culture from the workplace completely and to create a culture of zero tolerance for bullying, it is vital to take a proactive approach to the issue and an environment should be created where an employee can put forward his/her bullying issues to the bosses without any fear. Bosses should establish an open door policy for the employees so that they can speak in a safe and supportive environment without any judgment and penalty. To run any organization or any educational institution successfully, the key prerequisite is to make the working culture and environment very feasible and employee friendly. Secondly the bullying cases at the workplace should be eradicated completely from the ground level. Last but not the least is that an employee should be treated like an employee but not like a slave. After all an employee is a human being but not a robotic and programmed machine.
