Kathua Case: Startling disclosures made by Raina, Singh
Meet with Amit Shah
5/30/2018 11:40:10 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 30: The Monday meeting of J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina and former minister Lal Singh with BJP national president Amit Shah and the startling revelations these two BJP leaders made on Monday and Tuesday could prove costly for the party in Jammu province, where it was already at the receiving end for various reasons, including its failure to stand with the agitating people of Kathua and make the PDP-BJP government order CBI probe into the alleged Kathua murder and rape case.
On the one hand, the meeting proved that whatever Lal Singh did after he was made to tender his resignation from the ministry for sharing the dais with Hindu Ekta Manch leaders at Kootah, Kathua, had the tacit support of a section of BJP leadership at the Centre and in the state. On the other hand, what Raina and Lal Singh said established that Rasana episode had the potential of damaging the party's poll prospects not only in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but also in the assembly elections whenever held.
The January 2018 Rasana episode angered the people of Kathua and Samba, which returned 7 members to the assembly, in particular and of other districts, including Jammu district, in general. The BJP had won the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda seat in 2014 primarily because of the support it got from the Kathua district. It had also won all the seven assembly seats in Kathua and Samba districts.
The three revelations which Raina and Lal Singh made on Tuesday were very significant. One was that the party admitted that it would suffer huge losses if CBI probe was not ordered in the Kathua case. The other was that the BJP national president spoke the language of the struggling people of Kathua that the Kathua case was a conspiracy hatched against Jammu.
"Amit Shah had called Lal Singh to New Delhi to assuage his fears of being outside BJP fold. The national president during the hour-long meeting endorsed Lal Singh's assertion that there was a conspiracy against Jammu and the CBI probe into the Rasana case was inevitable if the party wanted to retain the political clout it had earned in 2014 elections," Raina was quoted as saying. It was a very significant statement.
The third revelation was that "Shah did not object to the activities of Singh and asked him to garner more support for party in Jammu. Now Singh will intensify his campaign for CBI probe. He has been given free hand to carry out activities. He can do what he wants. We cannot impose restrictions on his political activities".
