Early Times Report Srinagar, Jun 9: Expressing concern over too much use of plastic during "Wazwan" meals in marriages and other functions, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Saturday said only peoples movement could cut down its use which is going to fill lands and water bodies. Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, "Well said, we have started generating far too much plastic waste as part of our wazwan meals. We need a people's movement to cut down this needless plastic use that is going in to landfills & our waterbodies". He was reacting to an opinion in a local newspapers which reads "What is the need of packing 4 small hand towels in 4 puffy plastic boxes? Why shall the hot Gushtaba be served on a plastic bowl?"For the past few years it has been seen that plastic bags and other articles made from plastic are being used to service feasts during marriages and other functions in the Valley. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has already banned use of plastic in the state while government too has issued orders banning plastic. However, plastic bags and other articles, imported from outside, are being used openly in the valley, including Srinagar, without any check. |
