Rajnath rubs salt on wounds of border residents
BSF punctures Jitendra Singh's claim about security forces opposed idea of 5-marla plots

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 9: Desperate to retrieve its lost ground in plains of Jammu BJP today tried to encash announcements made by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh without knowing the fact that Singh had repeated the same words which his own government had announced two years back. On Friday Union Home Minister announced at Jammu to enhance compensation to the border victim from Rs one lakh to five lakh but the same announcement was made by the Union Government on July 2016.
On July 10, 2016 Union Government had announced enhancement of compensation to Rs 5 lakh to the civilians killed in cross-border firing along the Indo-Pak border but the same announcement was repeated by Rajnath Singh at Jammu on Friday.
Credible sources said that local BJP leaders have failed to properly brief Rajnath Singh about prevailing situation on the borders in plains of Jammu. Union Home Minister has repeated the decision which was taken by the Union Government two years back.
Similarly he announced construction of bunkers on the borders but the same announcement was already made nearly a year back.
It is believed that main aim of Rajnath's visit was to grant general amnesty to stone pelters of Kashmir Valley and he visited Jammu only as cosmetic exercise just to befool the people here who had voted BJP in the year 2014 assemby as well as Parliament elections. "Rajnath Singh had no new incentives for the firing affected families of Jammu region", sources said and added that Union Home Minister's visit has only rubbed salt on the wounds of border residents.
Singh has made no announcement to treat residents of IB equal with the residents of LoC, which is long pending and genuine demand of the people.
Border residents demanding permanent rehabilitation at safer places, one job to for every border household, assured income for every family, enhancement of compensation, ambulances, compensation for land affected due to fencing, age relaxation in government jobs for border youth, reservation in jobs and many other issues but no assurance was given to them on their demands.
Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) has refuted Union Minister in the PMO Jitendra Singh's statement that the government scrapped its project to allot border residents plots in safer locations following concerns raised by the security forces.
Singh, who is also local MP, during his interaction with shelling affected displaced border residents in Hiranagar sector recently expressed helplessness to provide 5-marlas plots to displaced residents. "The project was shelved in view of the concerns and requests of security forces," Jitendra Singh had told the residents.
It may be recalled that in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, BJP had promised to provide 5-marla plots (around 272 sq ft) to each family of border residents in peace zones. But four years after coming to the power, the ruling party has now backtracked on its pledge, alleging that the security forces have not appreciated the idea.
"BSF has not been consulted on this so far. We haven't even heard about it…BSF will share its point of view and give its suggestions to the government if it is asked for it," BSF PRO Shubhendu Bhardwaj told a national daily. "Ninety percent of border residents gave votes to the BJP during Lok Sabha polls after it promised to provide us plots. The ruling party is not sincere towards resolving our issues now," said a border resident.
