BARAMULLA, June 12: Two policemen were killed and another injured in a militant attack in Pulwama district of south Kashmir.
The militants launched an attack on the police guard at new court complex at Takiya Wagam in Pulwama, officials said.
They said two cops, Ghulam Hassan Chopan and Ghulam Rasool Lone, died in the attack. The militants later took away two INSAS rifles from the slain cops.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended on the native villages of the two slain cops. The mourners condemned the militants for attacking the cops on the night of Shab-e Qadar when Muslims were begging for peace and prosperity from Almighty Allah.
A huge gathering attended the last rites of Chopan at Wohlutra Panzala area in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Relatives of Chopan said that this is not a jihad in which the militants kill their own Muslim brethren.
Emotional scenes were witnessed when body of Chopan reached his native village. Thousands of mourners across Rafiabad, including men, women and elderly, assembled in Wohlutra village. Chopan is survived by aged parents, wife and three children.
Similar scenes were witnessed at Gogal Lolab in Kupwara, when the body of the other slain cop Ghulam Rasool Lone was brought there. Lone has left behind three minor children and his wife.
Earlier a wreath laying ceremony was held in District Police Lines Pulwama where tributes were paid to the slain policemen.
