Centre asks J&K admin to gear up for the Local Bodies Polls | | |
Early Times Report New Delhi, July 6: The Centre has directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to gear up for urban local body polls, which were last held in 2005, over two decades back. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who presided over a security review meeting held in Srinagar discussed the modalities for holding the local body's poll and augment measures of preparedness. The Home Minister Mr Rajnath on his maiden visit to the state after Governor's rule was imposed in the state in said that governance at the grassroots was important and it was necessary that the local bodies are revived and empowered. The local bodies poll would also serve as a precursor to holding the assembly elections and it might pave the way to test the waters and study the ground realities in the trouble-torn state.; Jammu and Kashmir have 78 urban local bodies including the municipal corporation of Jammu and Srinagar. The polls for village panchayats planned earlier by the BJP-PDP coalition government could not be held as per the original plan due to security concern and the imminent tourist season and it was deferred. As per the initial plan the elections were to be held in four phases from February but had to be postponed as the Government fell as a fall out of a misunderstanding between alliance partners. Mr Singh who could not visit the Amaranth Shrine due to inclement weather sought a ground report from all intelligence agencies and reviewed the security situation there. |
