Mining Mafia active, authorities in slumber | | | Ashwani Sharma
Early Times Report
Udhampur, Aug 4: Threatening the nature and violating the orders of the court, illegal mining is going on at alarming rate here at river Tawi in Toldi Nallah , Birma pull and other places in Udhampur. Sources informed that the concerned authorities are bribed monthly so they do not stop the illegal practice. The illegal mining has increased the threat of flash floods in the area. Locals living in vulnerable areas have appealed the Governor N.N Vohra and deputy commissioner Udhampur Ravinder Kumar to strictly deal with the mining mafia as every year either their homes of agricultural fields are washed away in flash floods for which the unabated mining is one of the main reasons. Bishan Dass informed that every day and night he along with his other village colleagues see many tractor trolleys, tippers and trucks enter the Tawi river and collect gravel, sand and stones from the river bed by JCBs which are totally banned and cannot be used in water bodies like Tawi and other streams for illigal mining . "We can't stop these people from collecting all the things from river bed as they have sharp edged weapons, rods etc and there is every possibility of an attack if we try to stop them," Surinder Kumar another villager said adding that it is the job of police. A village elder living near Tawi said that the environment authorities should also check the activities of mining mafia and inform their higher ups. |
