Now PSOs made to work as
Despite militant threat, netas misuse security cover
8/4/2018 11:44:59 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 4: Even as militants have intensified activities in restive Kashmir, the politicians who have a threat to their lives continue to misuse security cover provided to them by the government.
Whereas it's an old complaint in Jammu and Kashmir state that the Personal Security Officers provided by police to "influential people" are made to do odd jobs like driving of vehicles, in the latest, the PSOs are seen working as cameramen during political rallies.
One such incident has surfaced on social media. It shows that at a political rally organized by the Peoples Democratic Party in Bandipora area of north Kashmir, the PSO hung his weapon on his back.
Instead of maintaining vigil with gun in his hand, the PSO is busy doing a different job.
As per the visuals accessed by Early Times, the PSO is capturing video of the rally of the politician with whom he is deployed.
The incident has taken place in Laherwalpora Bandipora, when militancy has witnessed a deadly revival in the region and threat perception to the lives of politicians and other such people has increased.
Interestingly though many of the citizens have objected to the misuse of PSO, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been silent on the indiscipline.
It was reliably learnt the politician from PDP with whom the PSO is attached made him do the odd job.
But what is more shocking is that police often remain silent on such cases of indiscipline lest the politicians feel displeased.
"Unless the police department brings in accountability with regard to working of the PSOs, the security system will be in shambles. But the bigger problem is that for the past three-four years the police have almost given up acting on these lines," said a police official on the condition of anonymity.
Despite repeated attempts the PDP leader who allegedly misused his PSO, couldn't be contacted for comments.
