Govt formation may have to wait | Article 35-A Row | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 6: Supreme Court deferring the hearing on the petitions challenging the validity of the Article 35-A till August 27 has put the politicians, who were trying to form a political dispensation in Jammu and Kashmir, in a tight spot. Sources said that the rebels within the Peoples Democratic Party had told the legislators, whom they are trying to woo, that the government would be formed soon after the annual Amarnath Yatra end. The annual pilgrimage would end on August 26 and the next date of hearing has been fixed just a day after Yatra ends. An insider revealed that PDP rebels were told by their friends to maintain a "low profile" till the Yatra ends and not create much hype about their next move. "On the other hand PDP is trying to keep its flock together by projecting another senior as its chief ministerial candidate. Politicians were desperately waiting for Yatra to end," he added. An analyst said, "It looks like that Governor's rule is likely to continue in J&K as none of the Kashmir based politicians would want that Article 35-A should be revoked during their tenure." He said that the politicians in the Valley are desperate to retain the power as they know that still more than 2-years are left for the Assembly's tenure to end and they know it very well that it won't be easy for them to win the next elections. "The future of Kashmiri mainstream politicians is linked to the decision on Article 35-A. They would have to wait till the Supreme Court hears the case as the hearing cannot be differed indefinitely," the analyst added. A politician said that BJP legislators from the Jammu region have been asked by the party high command to stay away from making any attempts to form the government as the Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has got some other plans. "BJP knows it very well that if the Article 35-A is scrapped in J&K it can project it as its major achievement in 2019 parliamentary polls and can tell the people it has succeded in taking a step forward towards complete merger of J&K into the Indian union," the politician added. A Kashmir watcher said that politicians in J&K would have to take a back seat at least for the time being till the decision on Article 35-A comes. "The Apex Court has deferred the hearing for 20-days. So it means that even the highest court of the country is not interested in dragging this case anymore," he added. |
