Poonch admin must learn lessons from 2014 floods | | | Early Times Report
POONCH, Aug 10: The assessment of flood damages by the government has shown Poonch as the worst-affected district in Jammu region with massive devastation of public and private property, besides loss of over two dozen lives. As per official figures, the floods have claimed 26 lives in the district while 65 persons have sustained serious injuries. Apart from loss of lives, the public utilities of all the departments have suffered extensive damage while several hundred houses and agriculture land have been washed away or damaged due to flash floods and landslides. The recent rains in the district haunts the people and they are forced to think whether the 3 years efforts are quite to stop further destruction as the crates and boundary walls along the river beds are still not made even after 3 years of floods. Moreover the administration doesn't keep any check on the illegal construction and illegal mining on the river beds which pose a major threat to lives and property. |
