Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 10: Even as the militants tortured another youth to death in south Kashmir, the Kashmiri separatist leadership, and others including rights groups who call themselves as champions of human rights, have been silent on such gruesome murders. On August 9, Arif Ahmed Sofi, who was one of the two youths released after being tortured by militants, succumbed to his injuries at a Srinagar hospital. Arif, son of Fayaz ahmad Sofi, resident of Khodweni area in Kulgam district, had been working as a salesman at a local mobile phone shop where he earned meager wages to feed his family. He was abducted by militants from his residence on Tuesday evening. Same time around, another youth, Mehraj Ahmad was also abducted from his home in neighbouring Havoora. Though both were released after torture, Fayaz succumbed to injuries. Sources said the families of the twin youth were reluctant to file any complaint against militants. But after the killing of Fayaz, police voluntarily filed a case. A senior police official told Early Times that it was unfortunate that nobody not even family members of such victims were ready to file complaint against militants. "See the poor people are scared only because many of the powerful voices who otherwise claim to be champions of human rights are silent on such massacres," the police official said. Pertinently the separatists, the so called civil society groups, and human rights activists of Kashmir are silent on the bloodbath at the hands of militants. Not even once do such voices raise voices on atrocities done by militants. Pertinently, it is the second such incident in Khodweni area of south Kashmir where civilian has been abducted and tortured to death my militants this year. Earlier in March this year, a Class 12 student, Omais Rashid Bhat, a resident of nearby Qaimoh area in Kulgam, was abducted and tortured by militants. He was dumped on a road with serious wounds. He later succumbed to injuries at a Srinagar hospital. All the concerned voices in Kashmir had maintained silence that time as well. "These Hippocrates didn't utter a word even when a man was slaughtered before his family in north Kashmir Sumbal a few months ago," said a police official. Meanwhile the family of Fayaz has sought reply from militants as to why their son was killed. But still no one is willing to come to their support. |
