UDHAMPUR, Sept 26: The dilapidated condition of a foot-bridge over River Tawi in Neele, Dalard village in Panchayat Jandror Tehsil Ramnagar of district Udhampur is posing a serious risk to the lives of hundreds of villagers.
The suspension wooden foot bridge was built in early 60s but its wooden flooring has not been replaced since long as claimed by the villagers. The bridge, which has been damaged severely due to the passage of time, needs proper and immediate attention now, the villagers said.
There is almost 15 to 20 thousands of population of six to seven villages, who are dependent on the said wooden foot bridge.
Ram Paul Tripathi, a student said, "The students like me cross this damaged bridge to reach school as well as tuitions. For all of us it is very scary to tread on the dilapidated bridge. We feel unsafe as the flooring of the bridge is almost damaged. The wooden planks are broken due to which it is very difficult to walk on it."
He said that 400 to 500 persons including students to and fro cross the damaged bridge adding that a steel or concrete bridge should be constructed to end the ordeal of the villagers.
"If you go down, you will see most of the wood planks supporting the bridge are decaying and need immediate repair. The bridge has been damaged due to passage of time but government has turned blind eye towards said bridge and put the lives of thousands of people at risk, said Tripathi.
Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Ravinder Kumar said that the condition of the bridge is in his notice adding that it will be repaired soon and if required we will construct a new bridge after preparing the DPR so that the common masses of the area do not suffer anymore.
