Party workers file nominations for ULB polls | PDP, NC fielding proxy candidates? | | Early times Report Srinagar, Sept 26: Despite poll-boycott by the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party, people associated with these parties have been filing nominations for the upcoming urban local bodies' elections. Two main political parties, the National Conference and People's Democratic Party have announced that they will boycott the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections in the state. Both the rival parties have made it clear that they will not contest the election unless the Centre clarifies its position on Article 35A of the Constitution, which is facing legal challenge in the Supreme Court. However, sources said that people associated with these parties have been filing nomination papers. "Several people associated with the PDP have filed nomination papers from Kulgam," a source said. For five municipalities of south Kashmir-Kulgam, Devsar, Achabal, Kokernag, and Qazigund-comprising 53 wards, 50 candidates have filed their nominations for first phase. "There are people from Congress and BJP. Besides that there are independent who have been associated with the PDP," the source said. For Srinagar ward 17 Hamdania Colony Bemina, a National Conference worker according to source has filed the nomination papers. "He will contest independently but is part of the National Conference," the source said. The source said that a close aide of MP from south Kashmir has also filed his nomination papers. The National Conference spokesperson and close aide of Omar Abdullah on Tuesday also resigned from the National Conference. He said that he will contest the upcoming municipal polls. J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president GA Mir on Tuesday accused the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of fielding proxy candidates for the upcoming urban local bodies elections. "They are fielding proxy candidates from various places," Mir has said. Mir had earlier questioned the decision of the NC and the PDP to boycott the polls, saying that they had kept the field open for 'communal forces'. Mir said the Congress was the 'only unifying force in the country and the state that was fully capable of defeating the forces hell bent upon to divide people on communal lines'. However, the PDP has claimed that the party will not field any proxy candidate for the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal elections in the state, slated to be held from October 08, 2018. PDP chief spokesperson, Rafi Ahmad Mir while reacting to the reports about proxy candidates has said, "There was no question of fielding any proxy candidate at this juncture." He has said that the party keeping in view of the situation on ground that was created due to the Article 35-A case has already decided to boycott the upcoming elections. |
