HC asks Govt to constitute State Wetland Authority

Srinagar, Sept 26: The state high Court today sought compliance of its directions as regards re-establish the networking of streams, lakes, wetland with River Jehlum and constitution of State WetLand Authority.
Hearing a public interest litigation, a division bench o the court passed the direction after hearing amicus cure Nadeem Qadri who submitted that these directions have not complied as also demarcation of National Parks and wetlands.
In October last year, a Division Bench of the court had directed the chief secretary to appoint any of the Commissioner Secretary as nodal officer for re-establishing of network of water bodies with River Jehlum.
On August 28 this year, the court directed protection of wetlands and had sought information for constitution of State Wet Land Authority.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Alok Aradhe hearing a Suo-moto PIL on the instructions of Supreme Court had issued notice to Ministry of Environment and Climatic Change through its Secretary to inform the court on the issue of constitution of State Wet Land Authority.
Court had been informed that as per the 'Atlas Ecology and Remote Sensing' of the state there are 1230 wet lands identified in the state under 'Ramsar Conservation Sites'.
Referring to Rule 5 of the rules, court was informed that it provides that the authority has to be in place for management of wetlands.
